A South African doctor said that a baby born with his brain outside the head has died after being alive for three weeks.
A doctor on duty at the hospital when the baby died said Mondaythat Sibusiso Mokoena’s condition is known as anencephaly, and this was the cause of his death. Dr. Ntumda Mutondo told the news media that she performed CPR on the child, but could not revive him. Mutondo said the baby died Wednesday.
Sibusiso, known as Baby Mokoena in South Africa, was born on July 4, the American Independence Day.
Babies born with anencephaly usually do not survive for long. Doctors say that some of the main causes of this disease are a deficiency in folic acid and certain vitamins during pregnancy.
This disease however is not very common.
