Hair Care Basics

How to Take Care of Dry Hair

Taking care of hair that is naturally dry can be quite a task. And what with the unruly frizz that tends to always be a companion of dry hair, not to mention the dull, lifeless look it gives your locks, making it look presentable can give the best of us a harrowing time. But worry not. For help is at hand. Here are some quick and easy tips to take care of dry hair and give it that healthy sheen.

  • Use a mild shampoo. Preferably one without a sulphate (sometimes spelt ‘sulfate’) ingredient. Chemicals like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate tend to rob hair of its moisturising content and end up leaving it dry and brittle.
  • Conditioners are your best friend. Use a moisturising conditioner without fail every single time you shampoo. It can help put back some of the moisture that the shampoo may have robbed from your hair.
  • Don’t shampoo every day. Shampooing your hair everyday can damage your already dry hair a lot more. Once or twice a week is good enough. This will preserve the natural oils in your hair. If you must, wash it with just water in between. This could give you some natural glow.
  • Oil your hair once a week before you shampoo. Almond oil, olive oil, coconut oil, sesame oil, and mustard oil are some of your hair’s best friends. Massage before washing once a week.
  • Keep off the styling stuff as much as you can. Curling irons, hair dryers, straightening irons can all damage your dry hair. Use them with caution and never overdo it. These products that use heat to style and mould your hair will leave them damaged and drier than before.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner after you wash. Some conditioners will even give you a frizz-free look. Look out for those.
  • Rub a few drops of oil on your palm after you wash your hair, and rub it into half dry hair. This can act as a natural frizz removing technique.

How to Use Egg for Hair Conditioning

You can make your own hair conditioner by using some ingredients found at home. Egg is one of those. It has a lot of nutrients such as the essential proteins which can restore the damage effectively. You need to learn the right method of using egg for hair conditioning in order to bring back the natural shine and glow, which are lost due to regular wear and tear, pollution or any other cause.

Method of Using Egg as Hair Conditioner

  • Crack the egg yolk into a bowl. Make sure to separate the yolk from the white. Beat the yolk and whip it completely so that it is mixed well.
  • Add one tablespoon of olive oil to the whipped yolk and start whisking the mixture again. If you want a more pleasant smell, replace baby oil for olive oil.
  • Add lukewarm water to make the mixture spread better. You want it to spread evenly throughout the stretch of your hair on the head.
  • Now, before you apply it on your hair, clean it with a mild shampoo. Make sure that the excess water is removed from the hair after rinsing.
  • Apply half the mixture on your hair, spreading it over the top of your head. Prevent it from coming on your face, just because olive oil is not good for facial skin, although egg yolk is beneficial. The other half of the mixture needs to be applied by using hands on the back of your head.
  • Make sure that there is an even coating of the mixture on your head. Running the fingers on your hair can help you in ensuring this. Allow it to set on your hair for five minutes at least. You can let it set for up to 30 minutes for better results.
  • It is time to rinse the mixture off your hair now. Use lukewarm or even cold water but never use hot water. It may cook the egg on your hair, necessitating another wash. Besides, cool water is helpful in making the hair shiny.

The proteins in egg make the hair follicles stronger, and reduce the number of split ends. Other ingredients such as sulphur, vitamins and minerals aid in faster and healthier growth of hair

Limit their use only till the special occasions if you want silky hair. All these make your hair dry and brittle thus making them prone to split ends.

Avoid using multiple products

A common mistake made by people in desire of having soft and shiny hair is using multiple products. Avoid using lot of products. No matter how tempting is the new product that guarantees the long hair, it is always better to stay away from the chemical products. Instead use a smoothing serum that can effectively take care of fly-aways and nasty split ends.

Use a restoring conditioner on weekly basis

Restoring conditioners are weekly nutrient dose for soft and silky hair. Deep moisturise your dry hair and use restoring conditioners, especially if there are split ends.

Oil Massage

Take half cup of warm olive oil and gently massage it on scalp and hair.  Leave for 20 to 30 minutes and then wash to get soft and silky hair.

How to Get Stronger Thicker Hair

Some people are born with beautiful, thick and long hair but the others need to find the secret to healthy and good looking hair. Beautiful hair adds a glow to woman’s beauty.

To get stronger and thicker hair, a good and proper hair care regime should be followed. Proper diet, regular piling and proper supplements help you to maintain healthy and thick strands. Here are a few tips which will help you to get gorgeous looking hair:

Eating right

The number one tip to get stronger, thicker is to improve your eating habits. Healthy eating leads to healthier hair. To keep your hair healthy, make sure that your diet contains plenty of protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and vitamin A, all crucial for scalp health and keeping hair shiny. Supplementing with too much vitamin A may actually contribute to hair loss, so take a balanced vitamin diet for beautiful long hair.

Stimulate your scalp
Stimulate your scalp by massaging your hair at least once a week, with warm olive or coconut oil. Do a gentle massage by rubbing the oil on the scalp, in small circular motions. You can even dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the excess water from it and wrap it around your hair. This will help the oil reach hair follicles, making your hair strong, thick and healthy.

Conditioning
When your hair is well hydrated, it is less likely to dry out and split. So condition your hair properly even if you skipped shampooing. A deep conditioning can do wonders for your hair. Henna is a boon for hair as it serves as a great conditioner and even promotes hair growth.

Avoid too much brushing

Limit the amount of times you brush your hair. Do not brush while hair is wet as it creates split ends and also breaks. Detangle hair regularly using a wide-toothed comb. Knots and tangles interfere with the hair’s ability to grow longer and thicker.

Avoid too many washes

Wash your hair every few days but do not overdo it. Washing hair too often pulls the strands, damages the scalp and takes out all the natural oils from your hair that are essential for growing longer, thicker hair.

Shampoos for thicker hair

Go for sulfate free shampoo for washing your hair. They often contain less harsh detergents, or none at all, hence help to preserve hair's natural oils.

Avoid Drying

Avoid over drying your hair, let it dry by itself. If using a blow dryer on your hair, keep the temperature cool. Avoid heating instruments as they cause damage to your hair. The best tools to prevent heat damage are ionic dryers and ceramic irons with uniformly heated plates.

It’s easy to get your hair longer and thicker. With a little love and smart styling, your hair can get thicker and longer naturally.

Types of Combs and Their Uses

What is a comb? It is a flat tool made up of wood, plastic or metal with a row of thin or wide teeth on one edge. A comb is an article with teeth on one side for hair grooming. This is also the first article created to enhance beauty.

Hair combs are made up of different materials and have different varieties. There are many kinds of combs having different uses:
  1. Wide tooth combs - Are used for detangling the locks.
  2. Fine Tooth Tail Comb - These combs have the appearance of a normal comb with a long, pointed tail coming off from one end, and are used for styling and parting hair.
  3. Teasing Combs- Are used in teasing the hair.
  4. Styling Combs with Metal Pins- are used for styling and smoothing the hair.

Combs are also made up of different materials. Following are some of them:

They can be very nice on the hair if they are completely silky. If used gently while combing, it can lessen breakage. This comb is not water-resistant and therefore, it can’t be cleaned with water, but oil.

A few tips when using a comb are:
  1. Don't ever use a close teeth comb on wet hair as it will cause hair loss. Make sure that your combs are clean to make the perfect style.
  2. Always soak combs in vinegar and lemon to get rid of the dirt easily and to smell good.
  3. Use combs that don't have sharp ends. They can hurt your scalp and hair.
  4. To avoid snagging, use a comb that has seamless teeth.
